THE FUTURE OF QUEEN OF PEACE NECESSARILY PASSES THROUGH BUILDING A NEW PARISH CENTER

Feast of Saint Matthew, Apostle and Evangelist

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

As I prayed over today’s Gospel, the call of St. Matthew to be a disciple, apostle, and evangelist of Christ, something came to my heart. When Jesus calls Matthew, there's a second moment, a different place where to celebrate the call, sharing a communion meal with many others. “As Jesus passed by, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the customs post. He said to him, ‘Follow me’. And he got up and followed him. While he was at table in his house, many tax collectors and sinners came and sat with Jesus and his disciples” (Mt 9:9-10). These two moments are essential to make disciples (apostles): the place to listen to Christ's call (the church), and the place to live out, share and assimilate that call to a new life (a parish center).

We are so blessed at Queen of Peace to have a place for the first moment - a beautiful, inviting place to listen to Christ’s call. We are blessed that our fellow brothers and   sisters in Christ who came before us, and many here today, opened their ears and hearts to the Lord and built the church we have today. They overcame obstacles and trusted God to provide, and for that, we should all be very grateful. A year ago now, I established a building committee to advise me on the much-needed building of a Queen of Peace Parish Center.

Now, it is time for us to move forward and build the second space, in which we come together to foster, discuss, and share with others the love of Jesus Christ; a new parish center to help us evangelize and make disciples! In this day in age, only about 2-3% of Catholics have had an actual encounter with the person called   Jesus Christ, which compels them to leave everything and live for Him, not just in words, but in actions. According to author Sherry Weddell, "Huge numbers of self-identified Catholics are not certain that a personal relationship with God is even possible and their actions reflect it. A majority of Catholics in the United States are sacramentalized, not evangelized." (Sherry Weddell Forming Intentional Disciples, 46)

Even if humanly speaking, I do not have the desire to embark on such an enormous project, in faith, I accept God's call to lead and move forward with this exciting mission. We are fulfilling it together, as part of God’s family. As such, we must join all of our gifts and resources to prepare the house we need for such a great family.  It requires that we all become apostles of Christ and of His Church; it entails generosity and dialogue; different gifts, but equal sacrifice. As St. Paul tells us, “And he gave some as Apostles, others as prophets, others as evangelists, others as pastors and teachers, to equip the holy ones for the work of ministry, for building up the Body of Christ” (Eph 4:11-12). To build the body of Christ, we cannot leave anyone behind. Our task is more than rising up walls and roofs, its building up a community of faith that will bring the Gospel to thousands and thousands of youth, elderly, marriages and infants; a community of faith to share and to become what we receive in the Sacraments.

We cannot delay this project any longer. Every day that passes, the conditions of our facilities worsen, they become more expensive to maintain, and fewer people want to spend time inside a mold-ridden, unwelcoming environment. We are a family, and this is not the best house for our family. This is our opportunity. If we don’t do it, I don’t know if our children, grandchildren, our children in the Aurora community will ever forgive us, because we had the opportunity, we had the means, we heard the call, but we didn’t answer! Think of where the children and grandchildren of our church will be in ten, twenty, and thirty years. If we don't build a parish center, where will they go to learn and love their faith? Will they still believe in God?

This project is for God, for His glory, and for His people, therefore, we put it in His hands, praying that He guide us in doing His work and asking for His and our Blessed Mother's intercession. This Friday, we will begin a Novena to Our Lady of Good Remedy (you can find her history in the following pages.) We will pray at the church every day at the end of each Mass and Communion Service, ending the Novena on Our Lady of Good Remedy’s feast day on October 8. If you cannot be at the church, you may do the Novena at home, using one of the prayer cards provided on the Welcome Desk at the Gathering Space. I ask that you please participate, as a member of God’s family.
