THE LORD GIVES US FREEDOM TO LEAVE A MARK AND BECOME HIS TRUE DISCIPLES

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

It is good to be back at Queen of Peace, reenergized by the many graces we received at World Youth Day in Poland and by the words of the Holy Father to our youth. I was very much touched by his invitation to come out of ourselves and to give our lives. He said, “This is itself a great form of paralysis, whenever we start thinking that happiness is the same as comfort and convenience, that being happy means going through life asleep or on tranquilizers, that the only way to be happy is to live in a haze.” Our world today attempts to keep us in this paralysis, in fear, enclosed within ourselves. Many live their lives simply going through the motions, enslaved to mindless entertainment, comfort, and consumerism. But the Lord can and wants to free us from these paralyses. Think of Pentecost, in which the disciples were afraid, locked within their fears. Jesus broke through, touching their hearts, and freeing them from their fears, which in turn, allowed the disciples to go out and give their lives to announce the Good news. The Lord wants to do the same with us.

In speaking of freedom, Pope Francis said, “We didn’t come into this world to ‘vegetate,’ to take it easy, to make our lives a comfortable sofa to fall asleep on. No, we came for another reason: to leave a mark…when we opt for ease and convenience, for confusing happiness with consumption, then we end up paying a high price indeed: we lose our freedom. We are not free to leave a mark. We lose our freedom.”

This World youth day was a gift for us all, in that we were able to find our freedom – not the false kind of freedom the world offers, which says we can do whatever we want, only worrying about ourselves. Rather, we experienced true freedom to give of ourselves completely and to live abandoned in the plan of God. This pilgrimage was no vacation for our youth. They experienced many discomforts – walking for over a dozen miles, heat, little sleep, being away from cellphones, etc. Yet despite their lack of comforts and securities, they were happy.  They found time to be with Christ, and that’s what true discipleship is.

In the next few months, all of us a Queen of Peace will have the opportunity to be true disciples of Christ. We will delve into the four core values of discipleship: Identity – knowing who we are, children of God; Trust – having complete confidence that God will provide and give us everything we need; Gratitude – giving thanks to God our Father always, and expressing our thanksgiving concretely; and Love – knowing God loved us first, and in response to His love, we give Him our love.

I invite you to be, listen, stay and enjoy Christ, and open your hearts as we enter into this time of discipleship – a time which will give us a new relationship with God.

EL SEÑOR NOS DA LA LIBERTAD DE DEJAR NUESTRA HUELLA Y CONVERTIRNOS EN SUS VERDADEROS DISCIPULOS

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,

Es bueno estar de regreso en Reina de la paz, revitalizado por las gracias numerosas que recibimos en la Jornada Mundial de la Juventud en Polonia y por las palabras del Santo Padre a nuestros jóvenes. Me conmovió mucho su invitación a salir de nosotros mismos y dar nuestras vidas. Dijo,  “Ahí está precisamente una gran parálisis, cuando comenzamos a pensar que felicidad es sinónimo de comodidad, que ser feliz es andar por la vida dormido o narcotizado, que la única manera de ser feliz es ir como atontado”. Hoy en día nuestro mundo intenta mantenernos en esta parálisis, con miedo, encerrados dentro de nosotros mismos. Muchos viven sus vidas mecánicamente, esclavizados al entretenimiento sin sentido, a la comodidad, al consumismo. Pero el Señor puede y quiere liberarnos de estas parálisis. Piensen en Pentecostés, cuando los discípulos tenían miedo, encerrados en sus temores. Jesús rompió con esos temores, toco sus corazones, y los libero, lo cual permitió que los discípulos salieran a dar sus vidas para anunciar la Buena Nueva. El Señor quiere hacer lo mismo con nosotros.

Hablando sobre la libertad, el Papa Francisco dijo, “No vinimos a este mundo a ‘vegetar’, a pasarla cómodamente, a hacer de la vida un sofá que nos adormezca; al contrario, hemos venido a otra cosa, a dejar una huella… cuando optamos por la comodidad, por confundir felicidad con consumir, entonces el precio que pagamos es muy, pero que muy caro: perdemos la libertad. No somos libres de dejar una huella. Perdemos la libertad.

Esta Jornada Mundial de la Juventud fue un regalo para todos nosotros, ya que encontramos libertad – no la libertad falsa que ofrece el mundo, la cual dice que podemos hacer lo que queramos, preocupándonos sólo por nosotros mismos. Al contrario, experimentamos la libertad verdadera de dar de nosotros mismos completamente, y vivimos abandonados al plan de Dios. Esta peregrinación no fue de vacaciones para los jóvenes. Experimentaron muchas incomodidades – el caminar más de 12 millas, la calor, el dormir poco, el estar alejados del celular, etc. Sin embargo, a pesar de la falta de comodidades y seguridades, estaban contentos. Encontraron tiempo para estar con Cristo, y eso es el verdadero discipulado.

En los próximos meses, todos en Reina de la Paz tendremos la oportunidad de ser verdaderos discípulos de Cristo. Profundizaremos en los cuatro valores fundamentales del discipulado: Identidad – el saber quién somos, hijos de Dios; Confianza – el tener la certeza que Dios proveerá y nos dará todo lo que necesitamos; Gratitud – el darle gracias a Dios nuestro Padre siempre, y expresar nuestro agradecimiento concretamente; y Amor – saber que Dios nos amó primero, y en respuesta a Su amor, le damos nuestro amor.

Los invito a estar, escuchar, permanecer, y disfrutar de Cristo, y abrir sus corazones al entrar en este tiempo de discipulado – un momento que nos dará una nueva relación con Dios.
