BACK FROM A WONDERFUL PILGRIMAGE: THE CHURCH CREATES BEAUTIFUL PLACES TO BRING SOULS TO HEAVEN!

Dear friends in Christ,

What a joy and privilege it was to spend eight days with almost fifty of our parishioners around Italy, in pilgrimage, to the tombs of the holy apostles Peter and Paul, celebrating the beauty of Christ and His Church. I have been personally touched by the power of the martyrs, those Christians who physically died because of their faith in Christ, to sustain the Church and bring the entire European continent to know and believe in the message of the Gospel. In the words of Tertullian, “The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the Church.” Their sacrifice gave rise to a beautiful springtime of conversions, learning arts, morality, works of charity, and society’s renewal.

During this time in pilgrimage, we witnessed the endless effort of the Church to bring Christ to the world through the liturgy, the preaching of the Gospel, love for the poor and the rejected, and through arts and architecture. Church buildings always represent the faith experience of the Christian community, trying to bring the Gospel to a suffering world. Our buildings express our profound identity of beloved children of God. Beauty is a sign of profound Christian love for anyone who approaches the Church. Throughout history, the Church has created beautiful places to underline that the Body of Christ is beautiful, life-giving, refreshing, salvific, inspiring, and above all, heavenly.

Church buildings need to be beautiful, because they give us a taste of Heaven. The Church is the path people need to walk to be in heaven, that is, in the joyful presence of the Holy Trinity, in full communion with all the angels and saints. Whereas our society fills days with false dreams, worldly hopes and ugly news, the Church is all about beauty, because she is in love with Christ, the most beautiful of all men (cf. Ps 45.) Many of the pilgrims in our group spoke of gratitude for this rich history of a loving Church with so many amazing treasures of knowledge, art and above all, love of Christ for everyone to admire and be changed by. Many of us shared how many beautiful things the Church has done for people of every age.

As we prepare to come together as a parish and prepare the parish center that our community needs, I pray that we may be immersed into and inspired by the longstanding history of Christian beauty with which our Catholic Church has blessed the world for almost 2,000 years now. Our mission of making disciples of all nations (Cf. Mt.28:19) depends on our sacrifice to leave a beautiful place for our children, neighbors, friends, and brothers and sisters for years to come. As so many Christians dedicated their lives throughout history to create magnificent spaces for the Lord, it is our turn now to join our energies, wisdom and strengths to tell everyone “how many good things the almighty has done for us!” (Ps 136.)

DE REGRESO DE UNA MARAVILLOSA PEREGRINACIÓN: ¡LA IGLESIA CREA LUGARES HERMOSOS PARA LLEVAR ALMAS AL CIELO! 

Queridos amigos en Cristo,

Que alegría y privilegio fue el pasar ocho días con casi 50 de nuestros feligreses alrededor de Italia, en peregrinación, a las tumbas de los santos apóstoles Pedro y Pablo, celebrando la belleza de Cristo y Su Iglesia. Yo fui personalmente conmovido por el poder de los mártires, aquellos Cristianos quienes murieron físicamente, por su fe en Cristo, para sostener la Iglesia y llevar a todo el continente Europeo a conocer y creer en el mensaje del Evangelio. En las palabras de Tertuliano, "La sangre de los mártires es la semilla de nuevos Cristianos." Su sacrificio dio lugar a una bella primavera de conversiones, artes, moralidad, obras de caridad, y renovación de la sociedad.

Durante este tiempo de peregrinación, hemos sido testigos de los esfuerzos sin fin de la Iglesia para llevar a Cristo al mundo por medio de la liturgia, la predicación del Evangelio, el amor hacia los pobres y rechazados, y por medio de las artes y arquitectura. Los edificios de la Iglesia siempre representan la experiencia de fe de la comunidad Cristiana, intentando llevar el Evangelio a los que sufren en el mundo. Nuestros edificios expresan nuestra profunda identidad de amados hijos de Dios. La belleza es una señal del profundo amor Cristiano a todos los que se acercan a la Iglesia. A lo largo de la historia, la Iglesia ha creado bellos lugares para resaltar que el Cuerpo de Cristo es bello, da vida, restaura, es salvífico, inspirador, y sobre todo, celestial.

Los edificios de la Iglesia deben ser bellos, porque nos dan un anticipo del Cielo. La Iglesia es el camino en el cual el pueblo camina para llegar al cielo, es decir, en la alegre presencia de la Santa Trinidad, en completa comunión con todos los ángeles y santos. Mientras que nuestra sociedad llena los días con sueños falsos, esperanzas mundanas, y noticias desagradables, la Iglesia está llena de belleza, porque está enamorada de Cristo, el más bello de todos los hombres (cf. Ps 45). Muchos de los peregrinos en nuestro grupo hablaron de gratitud por la riqueza de la historia de una Iglesia amorosa, con tantos tesoros increíbles de conocimiento, arte, y sobre todo, amor de Cristo para que todos lo admiren y sean transformados por él. Muchos de nosotros compartimos cuantas cosas bellas la Iglesia ha hecho por el pueblo de todas las épocas.

Al prepararnos para unirnos como parroquia y preparar el centro parroquial que nuestra comunidad necesita, rezo para que seamos sumergidos en e inspirados por la larga historia de belleza Cristiana con la cual nuestra Iglesia Católica ha bendecido al mundo por casi 2,000 años. Nuestra misión de hacer discípulos de todas las naciones (cf. Mt. 28:19) depende de nuestro sacrificio de dejar un lugar hermoso para nuestros hijos, vecinos, amigos, y hermanos y hermanas en los años que vendrán. Como muchos Cristianos dedicaron sus vidas a lo largo de la historia para crear espacios magníficos para el Señor, es nuestro turno ahora para unir nuestras energías, sabiduría y fuerza para decirle a todos "¡cuántas cosas buenas el todopoderoso ha hecho por nosotros!" (Salmo 136.)
