DISCIPLESHIP OF FAITH AND PRAYER WEEKEND IS A BEAUTIFUL START IN OUR JOURNEY TOWARD CHRIST

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

This weekend, we are taking a major step in our journey toward becoming disciples of Christ. We are making a pledge to God to spend more time in prayer and to grow and develop our faith. We are doing this, because God calls us to "Go and make Disciples of all nations" (Mt 28:19). But before we make Disciples, we need to become intentional Disciples ourselves. We cannot give witness of the beautiful love of God if we don't experience it ourselves and if we don't have a deep and loving relationship with Him, rooted in prayer. In the same way, we cannot share our faith if we don't know it and live it every day. At Baptism, we received the seed of faith, and in our upbringing, most of us received religious education and did our First Communion and Confirmation. But it's important that as adults, we water the seed we received and continue learning about the beauty that is our faith, our Church, and our God. Discipleship of Faith and Prayer gives us the spiritual tools and armor we need to answer the Lord's call.

It is key that we make this pledge during Mass, in which Jesus Christ makes Himself present in the Eucharist. After all, this pledge is between you and God. It's not a pledge you are making to me or to your spouse or children. It's personal - just you and Him. It is also important that we make this pledge in writing, on our Pledge Cards. It's easy for us to make promises, "I will pray more, I will read the bible, I will go to daily Mass, etc. etc." But how often do we forget or let our busy schedules come before God? Our written pledges make our commitment to God concrete. Half of our card was put before His altar, and the other half is meant to be put in a visible place in your home as a daily reminder of your promise to God.

I spoke a few weeks ago about tithing - giving God the first and best ten percent of what we have, in thanksgiving for His many blessings. That doesn’t just mean money, it also relates to our time (One tenth of our day is two hours and 24 minutes.) Like money, our time isn’t really ours, it’s God’s. He gives it to us to manage, and He will ask for an account. The Gospel compels us to assess how we manage what God gives us. “The person who is trustworthy in very small matters is also trustworthy in great ones; and the person who is dishonest in very small matters is also dishonest in great ones. If, therefore, you are not trustworthy with dishonest wealth, who will trust you with true wealth?” (Lk 16:10-12). 

Our pledge card gives us multiple forms of prayer that we can put into practice. You’ll also find resources in the Discipleship page of our bulletin, and our calendar lists many different groups and activities that will help us in our public prayer. We are also blessed to have a 24-hour adoration chapel where we can be in the Lord’s physical presence through the Blessed Sacrament. Try it, spend one hour a week in adoration, one quiet hour with Him, looking upon Him, and see how He gives you peace and a stronger relationship with Him.

 I invite you, brothers and sisters, to view this pledge as more than an obligation, but as a gift. Take this as an opportunity to place your needs before God, to speak with Him and listen to what He wants to tell you. Pray for others, as St. Paul encourages us to do in the second reading: “Beloved: First of all, I ask that supplications, prayers, petitions, and thanksgivings be offered for everyone, for kings and for all in authority, that we may lead a quiet and tranquil life in all devotion and dignity. This is good and pleasing to God our savior, who wills everyone to be saved and to come to knowledge of the truth.” (1 Tm 2:1-4)

Fin de semana de discipulado de fe y oración es un bello comienzo a nuestra jornada hacia Cristo

Queridos Hermanos y Hermanas en Cristo, 

Este fin de semana, estamos tomando un gran paso para convertirnos en discípulos de Cristo. Le estamos prometiendo a Dios dedicarle más tiempo en oración y crecer y desarrollar nuestra fe. Lo hacemos porque Dios nos llama ha “Id y haced Discípulos a todas las naciones” (Mt 28:19) Pero antes de hacer Discípulos, nosotros mismos tenemos que ser Discípulos intencionales. No podemos dar testimonio del hermoso amor de Dios si no lo hemos experimentado nosotros mismos, y si no tenemos una profunda y amorosa relación con Él, arraigada en la oración. De la misma manera, no podemos compartir nuestra fe si no la conocemos y no la vivimos diariamente. En nuestro Bautismo, recibimos la semilla de la fe, y en nuestra niñez, la mayoría de nosotros recibió educación religiosa e hicimos nuestra Primera Comunión y Confirmación. Pero es importante que como adultos, reguemos la semilla que recibimos y continuemos aprendiendo sobre la belleza que es nuestra fe, nuestra Iglesia, y nuestro Dios. El Discipulado de Fe y Oración nos da las herramientas y la armadura espiritual para responder al llamado del Señor. 

Es clave que hagamos esta promesa durante la Misa, en donde Jesucristo se hace presente en la Eucaristía. Después de todo, esta promesa es entre tú y Dios. No es una promesa que me haces a mi o a tu pareja o a tus hijos. Es personal – sólo tú y Él. También es importante que hagamos esta promesa por escrito, en nuestras Tarjetas de Promesa. Es fácil hacer promesas, “Voy a rezar más, voy a leer la biblia, voy a asistir a Misa durante la semana, etc. Etc.” Pero que tan a menudo las olvidamos o ponemos a nuestras agendas atareadas antes que a Dios. Nuestras promesas por escrito hacen que nuestro compromiso con Dios sea concreto. Colocamos la mitad de la tarjeta ante Su altar. La otra mitad se debe poner en un lugar visible de la casa para recordarnos de la promesa que le hicimos a Dios.

Hace un par de semanas hable sobre el Diezmo – de la necesidad de darle a Dios el primer y mejor diez por ciento de lo que tenemos, en agradecimiento por sus bendiciones. No se trata sólo de dinero, sino también de nuestro tiempo (el 10% de nuestro día son 2 horas y 24 minutos). Como el dinero, nuestro tiempo en realidad no es nuestro, es de Dios. Él no los da para manejarlo, y nos pedirá cuentas. El Evangelio nos impulsa a evaluar como manejamos lo que Dios nos da. “El que es fiel en las cosas pequeñas, también es fiel en las grandes; y el que es infiel en las cosas pequeñas, también es infiel en las grandes. Si ustedes no son fieles administradores del dinero, tan lleno de injusticias, ¿quién les confiará los bienes verdaderos”? (Lc 16:10-12).

Nuestra tarjeta de promesa nos muestra varias formas de orar. También encontraran recursos en la página de Discipulado del boletín, y nuestro calendario tiene varios grupos y actividades que los pueden ayudar en la oración pública. También tenemos la bendición de tener una capilla de adoración de 24 horas, en donde podemos estar en la presencia física del Señor a través del Santísimo Sacramento. Inténtalo, dedica una hora a la semana a la adoración, una hora en silencio con Él, mirándolo, y ve como Él te da paz y una relación más profunda con Él.

Los invito, hermanos y hermanas, a ver a esta promesa más que una obligación, sino como un regalo. Tomen esta oportunidad para poner sus necesidades ante Dios, de hablar con Él, de escuchar lo que les quiere decir. Recen por los demás, como San Pablo nos invita a hacer en la segunda lectura: “Te ruego, hermano, que ante todo se hagan oraciones, plegarias, súplicas y acciones de gracias por todos los hombres, y en particular, por los jefes de Estado y las demás autoridades, para que podamos llevar una vida tranquila y en paz, entregada a Dios y respetable en todo sentido. Esto es bueno y agradable a Dios, nuestro salvador, pues él quiere que todos los hombres se salven y todos lleguen al conocimiento de la verdad” (1 Tm 2:1-4).

Si no firman una tarjeta hoy, no se preocupen, aun lo pueden hacer. Pasen ala oficina parroquial por favor, y pidan una Tarjeta de Discipulado de Fe y Oración. Si no saben que prometer, vengan a las Juntas de Puerta Abierta los Lunes, y juntos lo platicamos. Si ya han estado dedicando tiempo a la oración y a desarrollar su fe, los invito a hacer un poco más. ¡Hagan la promesa, arriesguen, y vean como Dios cambia sus vidas!
