LET’S CONTINUE WORKING TOGETHER TO BUILD OUR NEW HOME

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

I would like to say how happy I am with the turnout from last weekend’s Listening Sessions. Nearly 1,500 parishioners came to share their dreams for our new home with architect Adam Hermanson and with each other. These Listening Sessions were very fruitful - we learned about different needs of the ministries, new ideas for our new buildings,  challenges we may face, and suggestions for how to raise the money we need. It was touching to hear everyone’s excitement about building something beautiful for God - from our youth, to our seniors, from our longtime parishioners, to those who have just recently begun to call Queen of Peace their home. We have saved all your input and our team of architects will take it into consideration as they design our new parish center.

I would also like to thank all of our volunteers who gave their time and talent to make these Listening Sessions a great success. Many cooked, brought food to share, and spent hours setting up and cleaning up in between listening sessions. It was truly a testament of how we CAN work together, no matter our age, background, or ethnicity, as a family, with “no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and in the same purpose,” as St. Paul asks us to be in today’s second reading.

Right now, our buildings are bursting at the seams. If you are in a ministry, you’ve likely experienced the struggle it is to find a room to meet or have had to change your meeting location at least once to accommodate another group. If you have not been to the area west of the Gathering Space, I invite you to come on any given evening during the week, to see how much activity is taking place in our current parish center. You can even look at our calendar on pages 9 and 10 of this bulletin and see just a sample of our scheduled events - multiple prayer groups, four different youth groups, marriage prep in English and Spanish, RCIA in English and Spanish, choir rehearsals for each of the eight Masses, bible study, ESL classes, and much more.  On Monday nights and Saturday mornings, you’ll find our classrooms packed with hundreds of our youth preparing to receive their Sacraments. We have about 1200 children enrolled in our Religious Education program, and we had to turn many away because of the lack of classroom space.

Even more crucial to our need for space is our need for safety. Our current buildings are dying; they were never meant to last as long as they have, and if we don’t act now, we face the risk of eventually having to close them, because of safety concerns. The shingles on our building are not only uninviting and falling off, they contain asbestos. Mold has permanently damaged the structure of Nevin Hall, due to the leaks the roof had for many years. These are putting our health at risk, and we have to address them now. Our Great Room was once our church, and it has been a great blessing to have its space available for large group gatherings, but its floor is not up to the City of Aurora code. The city has standards for the amount of support needed to hold certain number of people in a structure; not being up to code means the city doesn’t consider our floor to be strong enough. As our growing parish continues to welcome more families, this will become an even bigger problem.

Our current buildings are not fit for our mission, of being fishers of men. Let us come together to build, so that we may proclaim the words of today’s psalm: “To dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, That I may gaze on the loveliness of the LORD and contemplate his temple” (Psalm 27:4). ¡LAS JUNTAS PARA EL NUEVO CENTRO PARROQUIAL FUERON UN GRAN ÉXITO!

CONTINUEMOS TRABAJANDO JUNTOS PARA CONSTRUIR NUESTRA NUEVA CASA

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,

Quisiera decirles lo feliz que estoy con la participación de las reuniones sobre el nuevo edificio del fin de semana pasado. Cerca de 1,500 feligreses vinieron a compartir sus sueños para nuestra nueva casa con el arquitecto Adam Hermanson y con los demás. Estas reuniones fueron muy productivas - aprendimos sobre las diferentes necesidades de los ministerios, nuevas ideas para nuestros nuevos edificios, los desafíos que podríamos enfrentar, y las sugerencias de cómo recaudar el dinero que necesitamos. Fue muy conmovedor escuchar la emoción de todos por construir algo hermoso para Dios, desde nuestra juventud, hasta nuestros ancianos, desde nuestros feligreses de muchos años, hasta aquellos que recién han comenzado a llamar a Reina de la Paz su hogar. Hemos guardado todas sus aportaciones y nuestro equipo de arquitectos las tendrá en cuenta al diseñar nuestro nuevo centro parroquial.

También quisiera agradecer a todos nuestros voluntarios que dieron su tiempo y talento para hacer de estas reuniones un gran éxito. Muchos cocinaron, trajeron comida para compartir, y pasaron horas preparando la iglesia viejita y limpiando después de cada reunión. Fue verdaderamente un ejemplo de cómo podemos trabajar juntos, sin importar nuestra edad, origen o etnicidad, como familia, "en concordia y (sin) divisiones entre ustedes... perfectamente unidos en un mismo sentir y en un mismo pensar", como San Pablo nos pide que estemos en segunda lectura de hoy.

En este momento, nuestros edificios están estallando en las costuras. Si están en un ministerio, probablemente han vivido la lucha de encontrar un salón para reunirse o han tenido que cambiar su lugar de reunión por lo menos una vez por las necesidades de otro grupo o evento. Si no han estado en el área al oeste de la iglesia, los invito a que vengas cualquier noche durante la    semana, para ver cuánta actividad hay en nuestro centro parroquial actual. Incluso pueden ver nuestro calendario en las páginas 9 y 10 de este boletín y ver sólo una muestra de todos nuestros eventos - varios grupos de oración, cuatro grupos distintos de jóvenes, preparación de matrimonios en inglés y español, RICA en inglés y español, ensayos de coros para cada una de las ocho misas, estudio bíblico, clases de ingles, y mucho más. Los lunes por la noche y los sábados por la mañana,    encontrarán nuestras aulas repletas de cientos de jóvenes que se preparan para recibir sus sacramentos. Tenemos alrededor de 1200 niños inscritos en nuestro programa de Catecismo, y tuvimos que rechazar a muchos debido a la falta de espacio en las aulas.

Aún más crucial que nuestra necesidad de espacio es nuestra necesidad de seguridad. Nuestros edificios actuales se están    muriendo; Nunca debieron durar tanto tiempo como lo han hecho, y si no actuamos ahora, nos enfrentamos al riesgo de tener que cerrarlos en un futuro próximo, debido a cuestiones de seguridad. Las tejas en nuestro edificio no sólo son poco atractivas y se están cayendo, sino que contienen asbesto. Molde ha dañado permanentemente la estructura del gimnasio, debido a las goteras que hubo en el techo durante muchos años. Esto está poniendo nuestra salud en riesgo, y tenemos que    lidiar con los problemas ya. Nuestra iglesia viejita fue donde celebramos la misa por muchos años, y ha sido una gran bendición tener su espacio disponible para grandes reuniones de grupo, pero su piso no cumple con el código de Aurora. La ciudad tiene normas para la cantidad de soporte necesario para mantener cierto número de personas en una estructura; El no cumplir con el código significa que la ciudad no considera nuestro piso lo suficientemente fuerte. A medida que nuestra parroquia sigue acogiendo a más familias, esto se convertirá en un problema aún mayor.

Nuestros edificios actuales no son aptos para nuestra misión, de ser pescadores de hombres. Unámonos para construir, para que proclamemos las palabras del salmo de hoy: "Vivir en la casa del Señor toda mi vida, para disfrutar las bondades del Señor y estar continuamente en su presencia" (Salmos 26:4).
