The title “Mother of God” comes from the Greek word, Theotokos, which means “God-bearer.” On this day, we are reminded of the role that the Blessed Virgin played in the plan of our salvation. Through the Holy Spirit, God the Father prepared Mary to be the dwelling place where His Son and His Spirit could dwell among men. We venerate Mary as the place, or the way, for God to enter and to live in our humanity. Mary is the sign of hope for humanity: we can receive the grace that allows God to live among us.

The Nativity of our Lord is the culmination of a long history of God trying to come closer and closer to humanity. God has become involved in human history to the point of becoming man Himself. Now and forever God is one of us, and man is part of God. Though sin has the power to separate us from God, the Incarnation has even a greater power: man and God can be fully united in the person of Christ. The Creator has become a creature. Now, human history is divine history.

On this Third Sunday of Advent, we rejoice because the coming of our Lord at Christmas is almost here! Advent is a time of preparation for the coming of Christ – not just at Christmas – but also in our hearts and in our lives. In the second reading today, St. James encourages us to “Make your hearts firm, because the coming of the Lord is at hand” (Jas 5:7-10). How do we make our hearts firm for his coming? How do we prepare ourselves? Let’s turn to our Blessed Mother, who teaches us how to receive him.

¡En este Tercer Domingo de Adviento, nos alegramos porque ya casi llega la venida de nuestro Señor en Navidad! El Adviento es un tiempo de preparación para la venida de Cristo, no sólo en Navidad, sino también en nuestros    corazones y en nuestras vidas. En la segunda lectura de hoy, Santiago nos anima, diciendo: "Mantengan firme el ánimo, porque la venida del Señor está cerca."
